I wouldn't do it. It's a nightmare for you, and for the user... Instead, have a look at the Comb option. It works much more smoothly and does pretty much the same thing.

Set the comb to more than 1 character and make the field wider... And as TSN said, there's no need to tab, it will automatically jump to the next box once you enter a letter.
