I wouldn't do it. It's a nightmare for you, and for the user... Instead, have a look at the Comb option. It works much more smoothly and does pretty much the same thing.

It doesn't tab. It's a single field. Make it big enough for the whole entry.

Set the comb to more than 1 character and make the field wider... And as TSN said, there's no need to tab, it will automatically jump to the next box once you enter a letter.

You need to set it to more than 1 characters, as I wrote before... Settingit to 1 defeats the purpose. Have another look at the screenshot I attached.
